Job Description

The MCI is an English Language Arts (ELA) and English Language Development (ELD) content expert who leads Hiawatha Academies’ efforts to codify curricular approaches, assessments, and core instructional practices. This role reports to the Director of Teaching and Learning (DTL), sits on the Network Support Team and the Program sub-team, and collaborates with a Manager of Curriculum and Instruction who focuses on mathematics. The MCI leads ELA curriculum and assessment design, testing, and implementation in collaboration with Network Support Team, teachers, and instructional leaders. The MCI also leads the development and implementation of network-wide English language acquisition instructional practices and program design.



Bachelor’s degree

Minimum of three years of teaching experience in a K-12 setting (elementary or secondary ELA and ELD)

Minimum of two years of experience in curriculum and assessment design

Proven results as a teacher

Commitment to the mission and equity vision of Hiawatha Academies

Knowledge of K-12 curricula, vertical standards alignment, assessments, and instructional practices with expertise in English Language Arts and English Language Development

Experience analyzing academic data and advising on strategies in response to academic data

Knowledge of culturally relevant pedagogy and teaching and the ways in which equity should manifest in classrooms

Ability to learn quickly and to be effective in a fast-paced, dynamic, entrepreneurial environment


Experience setting vision and direction for curriculum, assessments, and instructional practices across a network of schools

Experience designing and delivering teacher and instructional leader professional development

Experience evaluating instructional program

Experience coaching and developing teachers and/or school leaders as instructional leaders

Master’s degree in a relevant field
