Job Description

School Start Up:
Provide leadership guiding the launch of Urban Ventures Academy's planning year and first academic year, including developing initial programmatic, staffing, curriculum, and opening procedures
Complete grant applications and fundraising for planning year budget needs
Develop school office procedures, methods and practices
Responsible for overall vendor management including, but not limited to, payroll, facilities, contractors
Implement outreach and marketing strategy to recruit student enrollment

Instructional and School Leadership:
Provide exemplary leadership to all members of the Urban Ventures Academy community to achieve outstanding performance in the school's mission
Work to dramatically improve student achievement by leading the educational program
Manage effectively faculty and staff
Develop and communicate the school's systems, culture and vision and create a plan to achieve that vision
Oversee curriculum development and assessment
Implement effective internal and external assessment systems and use data to inform decisions
Ensure strong consistency within the school program and curricular alignment with state and other rigorous standards
Maintain a visible and accessible presence to the school community
Outreach to community and school district about UVA model and develop support systems

School Culture:
Foster a positive and nurturing school climate aligned with the mission and values of the school
Ensure high standards for student behavior, performance, and attendance
Evaluate the health of school culture on a regular and on-going basis through a variety of means
Create and maintain a system of school wide positive behavior support for students
Address and disciplinary issues promptly


Operations, Finances, and Working with School Board:
Manage building operations
Oversee financing, budgeting and grant writing
Oversee marketing efforts of the school
Hire and retain high quality staff for the school
Oversee the human resources needs of the school
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the school
Implement board approved school policies
Ensure compliance with all pertinent local, state, and federal law
Build positive relations with board members
Be prepared for all board meetings
Fund raise with private donors and grant writing
Other duties as assigned by the board

Family Support:
Maintain frequent and regular communications with families through a newsletter, school website, one-on-one meetings, etc as appropriate
Communicate regularly with families regarding student performance and academic achievement
Work with staff to ensure regular classroom level contact with families regarding school policies, trips, events, and milestones
Work with staff to plan, coordinate, and support family meetings and special events

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree (Master's degree or higher preferred)
Valid Minnesota Administrative License (preferred)
Minimum of three years K-8 teaching experience
Experience coaching and developing staff
Experience working with a culturally and linguistically diverse student body

Knowledge of:
Local, state and federal laws applying to public charter schools
Special education needs and issues
English learner needs and issues
Inquiry based education and human-centered design
Social and Emotional programs
Budget preparation and control procedures

Ability to:
Plan, coordinate, and direct work and activities of teaching professionals
Manage budgets, prioritize expenditures, and seek innovative methods of fundraising and grant writing to provide school resources
Promote and market the educational program and services of the school

Skilled in:
Communicating clearly and effectively in both oral and written language
Engaging families and the larger community in the life of the school
Establishing and maintaining strong community partnerships

Institution Description

School Overview
Urban Ventures Academy is a new school that will open in the August 2019. UVA will start with grades 6 and 7, adding 8th grade the second year. UVA will secure a building in Minneapolis and work in partnership with Urban Ventures, a 501c3 non-profit organization focused on serving the Philips community of South Minneapolis. Target enrollment will be 250 students when full.

Educational Philosophy
UVA seeks to close the achievement gap through data-informed personalized learning and expansion of learning into creative design-thinking projects. Students will work through personalized learning plans with their advisory teacher and will develop projects in a variety of design labs including engineering and robotics, makerspaces, performance art, fine art, music and recording arts, urban farm and culinary arts, and writing.
