Minnesota enacted the First Charter School Law in the United States on June 4. 1991.
In 2000, Minnesota's Charter School Law recieved the Innovation in American Government Award from the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government.
In 2009, the Minnesota Legislature enacted a comprehensive "second generation" charter school law that focused on strengthening accountability and innovation. Minnesota's law has consistently been rated as the nation's best or second best charter school law.
In 2015, the Minnesota Legislature recodified the Charter School provisions into a sperate chapter of law. Minnesota Statutes - Chapter 124E.
