Teacher Relicensure Frequently Asked Questions

What do I have to do to renew my license?

Under Relicensure Forms, there are checklists for both the two-year relicensure and five-year relicensure processes. Follow the instructions found in the checklist that applies to you. In addition, keep in mind the following tips:

  • Save signed certificates of trainings, workshops, or seminars, and/or obtain a copy of college transcripts. Track your hours as you earn them so you don't have to recreate them before the application process.
  • Know your license expiration date.
  • Submit hours and license renewal application form(s) prior to the Relicensure Committee meeting dates.
  • Check with your school's Licensure Coordinator to make sure that time earned is applicable toward your relicensure.

How often does the Relicensure Committee meet?

The Relicensure Committee meets six times a year. See Relicensure Meetings for more information.

How do I track my continuing education units (CEUs)?

Each charter school should have a relicensure representative that is available to help teachers and administrators track their CEUs. If you attend a MACS event, CEUs are generally available but must be obtained the day of the event, or up to 30 days following the event. If you have not obtained your CEUs within this timeframe, MACS cannot grant CEUs and you will not be able to receive credit for the CEUs toward relicensure. For this reason, it is important to keep track of CEUs regularly rather than waiting until your license is up for renewal.

When should I fill out the application and mail my information to the committee?

You should be gaining clock hours toward your relicensure whenever possible. Plan to submit your relicensure application shortly after January 1st of the year it expires. Be sure the Relicensure Committee receives your application before the meeting dates.

Who is eligible for relicensure through the MACS Relicensure Committee?

Educators who are employed at MACS member charter schools are eligible for relicensure through this committee. Retired educators from any Minnesota charter school are eligible.

Can Administrators have their administrative license relicensed through the MACS Relicensure Committee?

No - Administrative Licenses are renewed directly through the MN Board of Administrators.
