Job Description

The Montessori Coach is an educational leader who focuses on day-to-day implementation of the curriculum. The Coach will mentor the Great River School elementary teaching team. Montessori Instructional coach will use programmatic data to provide insight, ensuring that program delivery meets educational standards and aligns with Montessori principles. The Montessori coach is in a role of support, role modeling, best practice design, and team building among our 12 elementary classrooms in an innovative Montessori public charter school in St Paul MN.

Reports to: Elementary Director
Classification: 1.0 FTE - Full time, Exempt

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Montessori Instructional Coach will:
Guide teachers to improve classroom instruction through modeling, observation, facilitation and feedback

Oversee the development and implementation of thematic, integrated weekly and daily lesson planning

Provide pedagogical coaching, professional development and other support to educators implement
educational guidelines, procedures and practices to achieve the highest educational standards

Support and model effective instructional practices by addressing the social, emotional and learning needs of educators

Work collaboratively with the leaders of the school to further develop Great River School as a quality education program that implements authentic Montessori principles.

Share knowledge of current research-based best practices and strategies for implementation

Support teachers in providing meaningful communication and frameworks to parents and others regarding student learning

Carry out other related job duties as assigned by the elementary director


An understanding that the Montessori learning environment is inclusive, justice-oriented, and equity minded

Comfort and willingness to engage in direct conversations regarding bias, prejudice, and systemic oppression of marginalized voices

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education or related field

Expertise in Montessori philosophy and practice

At least 3 years experience teaching elementary children

Highly motivated team player with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills

Passionate about learning environments for young minds

Invested in strengthening families and building community

Demonstrated appreciation of diversity and support for social justice efforts

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to coach and mentor adults

Flexibility to make thoughtful decisions in an evolving, multi-faceted environment

Ability to understand and use programmatic data to improve program quality

Ability to work the hours of the position based on the organization’s needs, including school after-hours events, as needed

Working knowledge of computers and be adept in commonly used software for email, internet, word processing, data collection, entry and analysis

AMI Montessori certification (or AMS certification with deep familiarity and comfort with AMI practices and approach)

Dedication to supporting and engaging in Montessori materials as the pedagogical tools of the elementary teacher

Preferred Requirements

Understanding of racial equity impacts on opportunity and accessibility in public education

Deep consideration and understanding of the impacts of systemic racism as it manifests in educational systems

Master’s degree in education, anti-bias approaches, or related field
Proficiency in a second language

5 or more years experience teaching and working with elementary children in both lower and upper elementary environments

Completion of the NCMPS coaches training
