Job Description

This position is part time for the 2019-20 school year, hours 8am - 1pm daily.

Classroom assistants work with the lead teacher to insure that children have an authentic Montessori experience, preparing and maintaining an orderly, attractive, and joyful environment. They regularly observe the students and share reflections with the guide. Classroom assistants are also crucial in modeling courteous and respectful behavior as well as contributing to the warm, supportive, and calm environment of a Great River elementary classroom.

Responsibilities Include:
Demonstrate respect, kindness and rapport with all students
Assist in the development of independence
Assist the teacher by redirecting children to work and aid children who need help
Help children work cooperatively in an atmosphere of respect, using models of behavior and intervention demonstrated by the teacher
Work with the teacher to prepare the environment each morning
Maintain order and cleanliness of environment daily
Assist in the cleaning, preparation, and maintenance of classrooms at the beginning of the school year, occasionally during year and at the close of the school year
Share responsibility for the daily safety, well-being and supervision of students
Supervise children on the playground
Eat lunch with the students, modeling grace and courtesy
Help the teacher make materials and plan activities
Assist with field trips and “going out”
Substitute for the teacher in cases of illness or absence (if teacher certified)
Report accidents and concerns immediately to the teacher
Assist lead guide to prepare for conferences with parents in the fall and spring of each year
Share observations and give input regarding each child’s academic, social, and physical development to share with families during conferences
Attend parent teacher conferences

Work with teacher to learn about philosophy of Montessori to further understand the goals of the class and the school
Work with other staff to maintain professional relationships of support and respect
Attend and participate in staff meetings, school events, field trips and training opportunities.


Demonstrated ability to work with children responsibly, ability to take direction, consistency and initiative to follow through on the duties of the role. Willingness to be trained in Montessori philosophy related to classroom support.
