Job Description

Job Description:
TCGIS is seeking a strong leader with excellent organizational and communication skills who can foster positive relationships with staff, students, and families. As part of the school’s Leadership Team, the Assistant Director of Special Education is responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day functions of the special education program. The Assistant Director of Special Education manages and supervises the school’s special education team while maintaining a positive and encouraging attitude that supports the mission of the school and the strategic goals set by the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.

Contribute to short and long-term organizational planning and strategy of the school
Collaborate with School Leadership Team on implementing school-wide behavior management system based on PBIS practices.
Collaborate with PBIS Team, Professional Learning Committee, Q-Comp Committee, to gather & share information, and to represent special education perspectives.
Participate in recognition events and other school-wide culture-building activities.

Special Education Program
Provide administrative oversight of the special education program.
Ensure compliance with due process laws, practices, and procedures through assistance to staff, parents, and others as required.
Participate in recruitment, selection, evaluation, and retention of special education employees
Lead special education staff training at the start of the school year and on professional development days.
Provide information to parents regarding the referral/assessment process, special education services available, and their rights relative to special education.
Consult and problem-solves with Executive Director and special education staff regarding difficult and/or potentially litigious special education issues.
Monitor compliance with special education due process requirements & staff caseload
Review and audit student Individual Education Plans to ensure compliance.
Serve as the primary supervisor for educational assistants, including coordinating ongoing professional learning, reviewing and approving bi-monthly timesheets, foster effective communication between EAs, teaching & support staff
Communicate the vision and mission of TCGIS through communications, meetings, and interactions with parents and students.
Support special education teacher’s understanding and implementation of the pedagogical concept.
Support special education teachers in consistent implementation of discipline policy, behavior expectations, and school-wide norms.
Attend training sessions, conferences, seminars, department and district meetings (i.e SEAC)

Collaborate with Academic Leadership Team and appropriate faculty on maintaining and reviewing the school’s pedagogical concept (special education/individualized learning pillar).

Required Qualifications:
Commitment to TCGIS’s mission, vision, values & strategic goals.
Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Special Education or related field.
Demonstrated leadership and project organizational skills, (planning, implementing, evaluation).
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent technological skills.
Experience in creating and maintaining relationships with third parties.

Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Special Education, Special Education Administration or related field.
Proficiency in German language and culture.
Experience working with staff from different countries.
Experience supervising teachers.

Working Conditions:
Physical Ability: Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
Occasionally may be required to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
Occasionally may be required to team lift up to 100 lbs.
Must be willing and able to work in the following environments: indoor, outdoor (all seasons) loud, hectic
Ability to work a flexible schedule including work as directed outside of the school calendar.

Salary will commensurate with experience. As a full time position, the Assistant Director of Special Education is eligible employer-sponsored benefits including health, dental, life, and disability insurance; paid time off (18 days per year) and paid holidays (12 per year); and automatic enrollment to Public Employee Retirement Association.
