Job Description

Position Purpose:
To provide enriching academic development of the Spanish language and a learning environment that is appropriate to the maturity, interest, and learning styles of ACC scholars; develop and maintain a linguistically and culturally appropriate Spanish language program in alignment with the mission and vision of the school; work with principal, instructional coaches, teachers, and other staff to ensure ACC’s mission, vision, values, and curriculum objectives are supported, modeled, infused throughout the curriculum, and taught to the scholars so that they are able to demonstrate a high level of growth and proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in Spanish.
Line/Staff Relationship:
● Immediate Supervisor: Academia Cesar Chavez Principal
● Work closely and collaboratively with instructional coaches, the Spanish team, and other educational staff
Major Functions and Responsibilities:
● Use the standards promulgated by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and the school’s designated curriculum to create a rigorous, objective-driven Spanish program
● Differentiate for individual scholars based on their unique learning needs to ensure
each is appropriately engaged and challenged
● Conduct a fall and spring assessment for all scholars to measure proficiency/growth in reading of Spanish texts and report this info formally to the principal
● Ensure scholars are engaged through activities and technology that accommodate
various learning styles and the need for physical movement
● Collaborate with other teachers to create interdisciplinary units that teach grade level knowledge/skills through Spanish
● Explicitly introduce learning objectives to activate scholars’ prior knowledge and
conclude the lesson by revisiting the learning objective

● Present content through a variety of instructional strategies to reach all learners
● Provide many varied opportunities for scholars to achieve mastery while promoting achievement by all scholars without exception
● Develop standards-aligned, measurable, ambitious goals that will increase student
opportunities for achievement; assess and track performance against these goals
● Measure student achievement of, and progress toward, the learning objectives and goals with formative and summative assessment tools
● Provide ongoing and timely feedback to scholars on their progress towards meeting big
goals by frequently checking for understanding, listening and comprehension
● Use data to reflect on effectiveness of lessons and student achievement progress in order to improve instruction and personal practice
● Create a focused environment of fairness and respect that encourages scholars to take
risks and strive to reach goals
● Communicate and enforce high expectations and standards for behavior and academic performance
● Implement classroom procedures, systems, and routines that provide structure for
scholars and maximize instructional time
● Communicate respectfully and thoughtfully with parent/guardians remaining sensitive to different families’ cultures, values and needs
● Initiate and maintain timely communication with all parents/guardians concerning
student progress and to provide a clear picture of the curriculum and high expectations
● Collaborate with colleagues (school-wide meetings, professional development days) to continuously improve personal practice, instruction, assessment, and student achievement, as well as the overall goals and mission of the school
● Access meaningful learning experiences (current theory, research, developments in
relevant academic disciplines, professional development opportunities and ideas from colleagues and supervisors)
● Reflect critically upon teaching experience; identify areas for further professional
development as part of a professional development plan that is linked to grade level, school and network goals
● Access meaningful learning experiences; and listen thoughtfully to other viewpoints and
respond constructively to suggestions and criticisms
● Be available to work evening hours and weekends on occasion for school events
● Other duties as assigned by the principal


● Demonstrate excellent knowledge of innovative teaching methods
● Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills in both Spanish and English
● Demonstrate excellent knowledge of Latino culture or be willing to research

● Previous teaching and/or instructional experience in an inner city setting/work with urban youth
● Ability to integrate technology into the classroom
● Demonstrate interest in public school reform and social justice
● Commit to the mission, values and vision upon which the school was founded
● Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity, interests and learning styles of the scholars
● Work with families and scholars from diverse educational, socio-economic and cultural
● Problem-solve and critically assess the skills a student needs using a variety of data
● Ability to take advantage of children’s individual interests and use their internal motivation for developing needed skills
● Effectively utilize a student’s individual interests and use their internal motivation for
developing need skills
● Set high expectations for all scholars
● Provide daily success opportunities for all scholars

Position Qualifications:
● Holds a valid Minnesota teaching license for grades K-8 or is able to obtain license by start date of position for 2020/21 academic year
● Professional verification of successful classroom teacher performance
and/or student teaching experience
● Excellent oral and written skills in Spanish
● Excellent knowledge/understanding of the Latino culture; embrace cultural diversity
● Evidence of the willingness and ability to comply with the standards for ethical and professional performance established by the State Board of Teaching
