Job Description

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES:
Great River seeks a versatile, active and creative teacher to teach Outdoor Education to students grades 1-6. The Outdoor Education curriculum includes environmental science, team building, outdoor living skills and outdoor recreation. This person will also provide structure and supervision during elementary recess time and in the after care program. Work hours will be from 10 am-6 pm daily.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching & Planning duties

Elementary Outdoor Education Teacher (.4 FTE): Plan and teach: environmental science and outdoor recreation lessons that engage students in a variety of experiential and active lessons on the outdoors including environmental/natural sciences, team building, and outdoor living skills. Guiding a rotating schedule of mixed-age classes including Lower Elementary (grades 1-3) and Upper Elementary (grades 4-6).

Other duties of direct service & supervision:
Guide, Aftercare Program (.3): Supervise free play & provide proactive structures for games and learning of social/emotional skills when and where necessary. Provide consistent behavioral support in our daily aftercare program which encourages creative, open-ended play and self-directed choices and learning. Lead enrichment workshops for children on topics such as handwork, crafts, science activities, games, and other topics related to guide and child interests.

Recess Supervision (.1): Monitor and engage with students at recess and assist other staff members as needed to help ensure a fun and safe experience for all students.
Planning time (.2):Typical schedule for this role would be student contact from 11:30 am until 5:30 pm, with planning duties preceding, and materials cleanup and preparation afterward (remaining 0.2 FTE). This role seeks a creative, child-development minded educator looking to make an impact in a Public Montessori setting. Additional employment is also possible through our Summer Day Camp program (7 weeks).

Qualifications

Qualifications

Required:
Experience leading outdoor education lessons and activities with elementary aged children
Familiarity with the Montessori method of education
A commitment to education as a transformational experience
An ability to consider the beliefs and perspectives of others
A willingness to support a culture of collaboration and team
Enjoyment of the outdoors in all types of weather
Desire to be engaged with children ages 6-12

Preferred:
Experience working at nature centers, camps and/or outdoor schools.
MN State Teaching License, or the ability to get one.
Trained in Project WET, Wild, and/or Learning Tree
Experiences with name games, icebreakers and cooperative activities
Experience with Outdoor Living Skills (fire starting, camping, leave no trace, etc).
Experience in after school and/or summer camp programming
Experience with the unique opportunities and challenges of a Montessori program serving ages 6-18.
Willingness to pursue Montessori certification
