As part of a systematic study of charter schools the National Charter School Research Project has released a study on succession planning in charter schools, You’re Leaving? Succession and Sustainability in Charter Schools. The study points out that about one-half of charter schools do not have a leadership succession plan because school leaders often do not make time to doing this planning and that boards often abdicate their responsibility in this arena.

The paper concludes by outlining a 5 Step process for creating a succession plan for boards to follow.
